July 15 - August 2, 2026: Solo Exhibition at Artifact Projects in NYC
Movement, both physical and psychological, is the conduit between my mind and the created image. My love for the mark, the mess, the order - the liminal experience of existing in the grey area between order and chaos - manifests through the imbedded evidence of my hand across the surface. The caress of the plane's texture, the media imbedding itself between the ridges of my fingerprints, the residual stains that I carry on my person for days after: all of these seemingly insignificant aspects of the artist's experience are reminders of my cooperative relationship with a medium's autonomy. Ephemeral visuals encapsulate memory, emotion, and vulnerability, mapping the mortality we do not always want to acknowledge. By creating a mirror subtly reflecting our humanity, my work aims to evoke questions of the human experience and the tactile experience of creation.
Madison Rocap was born in rural Estell Manor, New Jersey and is currently located in New Paltz, New York. She received her BFA in Studio Art from Pennsylvania Western Clarion University, previously known as Clarion University of Pennsylvania, in 2024. She is now a second-year candidate within the MFA Painting & Drawing program at the State University of New York at New Paltz, and is expected to graduate in May 2026. Her work is often comprised of mixed media on stretched fabrics, but some of her favorite media are charcoal, ink, and water-soluble crayon. Through mark-making, movement, and layering, Madison creates tumultuous and atmospheric works that encapsulate the dichotomy of the human experience. She welcomes viewers to empathize with the chaos, reminding them that they are not alone in their emotions and experiences.
Although only twenty-three years old, Rocap's work has been shown in a number of exhibitions, including Merge at Pennsylvania Western University, Draw Ridge at KAJE, and On a Wire by Aedra Fine Arts. She was selected as one of six "Best in Show" international artists by Aedra for their exhibition and has a critical review written about her art, which can be found on their website. Her first post-graduate solo exhibition is scheduled to be held at Artifact Projects in Manhattan in July 2026.
